The cinemas are closed and so are we, but that doesn't mean we don't still try to serve you the best content. Whether it's from our own productions or by way of recommendations. At VOD Tips, we pick the best from platforms like Netflix, HBO GO, Dafilms, Aerovod and more. So read our Journal regularly and watch along with us.
Twice from the Telegraph
This month's VOD Tips will be a little insight into the past year. First up, we'll look at the films that have had the most success at the Telegraph Cinema this year (or at least part of it, from the opening of the cinema to its ordered closure). Honeyland, which we screened at the Telegraph in August, was of great interest to you. This documentary follows the life of Hatizda Muratova, who makes her living wild beekeeping in the Macedonian mountains until her life is disrupted by the arrival of a travelling family on the land next door. This sensitive portrait of a resilient woman was praised at the Sundance Film Festival, where the film took home several awards. You can watch it at Dafilms or Aerovod.
Another successful film this season is also a documentary. Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful tells the life of controversial German photographer Helmut Newton in an engaging way. How does his legacy stand up in the 21st century under the influence of gender theory and feminism? Was he a lout or a gentleman? You can watch the documentary again at Dafilms or Aerovod.
Parasite, parasite, parasite, parasite...
The most successful film of the year (even though it officially went into cinemas in 2019) was Korean Parasite director Jun-ho Pong's Parasite. This family and social drama (some also call it a black comedy), which won four Oscars, the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and other awards around the world, follows the story of a poor family of four who use deception to infiltrate a wealthy family living in a lavish mansion. What they don't know is that they are not the first parasites to get to the Parks. You can watch the film on Aerovod.
The move by the lady
The end of the year brought an extraordinary feat in the world of soap operas as well. The Netflix series Queen's Gambit is set in the 1950s and follows the story of a young girl, a very gifted chess player, struggling with a world of prejudice and discrimination as well as her own addiction. Shortly after its release, this miniseries became one of the highest rated series on CSFD (24th) and IMDB (108th). You can watch it on Netflix
