Science on Film is a series of film screenings accompanied by scientific lectures by experts on the subject. In cooperation with the UP Crowd, we have been successfully popularizing science through film since last autumn and have already held 12 screenings and lectures!
Are you interested in biology, physics, chemistry, or perhaps psychology or sociology? Would you like to relax with a good film at the same time? We look at the films screened from a variety of perspectives and exclusively select cult films. In the last year we have brought back to the big screen films like Gravity, Alien, Back to the Future and Journey to Prehistory! This year we have a load of new cult films and themes for you too!
The first film under the SCIENCE IN FILM banner this year was LUCY from acclaimed director Luc Besson (Brutal Nikita, Leon) and starring Scarlett Johansson. A lecture by Dr. Eva Aigel then gave the audience a factual introduction to the topic of addictive substances.
But the science in the film didn't end there! March will belong to another 1980s cult classic - the movie MOUCHA! We bring back to the screen this great effects-packed, fantastic thriller from David Cronenberg, telling the story of an ambitious and mad scientist whose DNA gets mixed with tiny insects. Jeff Goldbloom excels in the lead role. The film will be accompanied by a lecture by Dr. Jiří Sojka, an expert in genetic engineering and biochemistry at Palacký University. What possibilities does genetic engineering bring us and where is its future heading? This lecture will focus on the principles of genetic modification, its practical applications and will dispel some common myths and misinformation that influence public perception of this technology. You will learn how genetic engineering actually works and how it can contribute to innovation in agriculture, medicine and other fields.
Tue 3/25/2025 / 7:00 PM SCIENCE IN FILM: MOUCHA

In April, we'll then delve into the phenomenon of artificial intelligence. What was the subject of science fiction in the now cult film I, ROBOT has already turned into a present reality for us. Humanoid robots that can talk, run, jump and argue are not yet common in our society, but human technology has already reached this point. Now we have no choice but to learn from the movies that predicted it. We view this topic positively. Obviously. Otherwise we'd be screening Terminator. The speaker on the subject of AI will be revealed soon, so mark this Tuesday in your diaries too!
Tue 4/15/2025 / 7:00 PM SCIENCE IN FILM: I, ROBOT

The ticket price includes the film screening and the directly following lecture by the guest speaker. The screening and lecture series is organized in collaboration with the student association UP Crowd.
