Film News, 1980s and Palme d'Or. Cinema in summer and summer cinema.

19 7 2023

Return to the cinema! With the arrival of August, we are loading the projectors again and opening the atrium and cinema hall. This means that you will find a total of 7 excellent film titles in the programme, which would be a shame to miss. July's media boom around Barbie (the marketing tie-up between two of the summer's most anticipated American blockbusters Barbie from director Greta Gerwig and the biopic Oppenheimer from director Christopher Nolan) certainly hasn't passed you by, but there are several other intriguing pieces heading to the cinema this summer that you shouldn't miss. This summer has something to offer and there is something for everyone.

Cinema below a roof has the most interesting (ki)news for you - a Sundance winner, a true Czech mystification and a powerfully moving romantic art film.
The Miracle Machine - ONEMANSHOW: The Movie - Past Lives.

Summer Cinema Without a Roof in our atrium will pitch two cult films from the American 1980s and two comedic satires and Cannes Palme d'Or winners.
Rambo - Beetlejuice - Parasite - Triangle of Sadness.

Read more about the films - below, or go straight to the Program.

From the late 19th century to TikTok. The Danish-Swedish documentary was produced by Danish filmmaker and contemporary megastar of world cinema Ruben Östlund, whose latest film, The Triangle of Sadness, can be found in the Palme d'Or section of the Cannes Summer Cinema at the end of the month.

Fri 8/18/2023 / 8:00 PM ONEMANSHOW: The Movie

The art of mystification and showmanship are two attributes that made the original OneManShow internet miniseries completely stand out. Now it's trying to conquer cinema screens, but it's not going about it the classic way. This heavily anticipated and media-massaged Czech project by Kamil Bartosek aka Kazma Kazmitch is shrouded in mystery and the screening itself won't be entirely typical either. As the film's tagline says "it's the only film that ends up in reality...". We can't reveal much more, but this one might be worth a visit on a Friday night. All the better for the fact that Czech filmmaker Andy Fehu has co-directed the project.

After 21 8 2023 / 20:00 MINUTE LIVES

When this film was watched by a thousand-strong audience at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, a good third of the audience left the Great Hall of the Thermal Hotel in tears of emotion. The romantic drama by debut director Celine Song, produced by the already cult independent film studio A24, invites to a story of separation and unfulfilled love between continents. The picaresque backdrops of South Korean Seoul and American Manhattan will leave you spellbound.

This original work masterfully works with elements of thriller, drama and satire to deliver a witty and unpredictable viewing experience. Winner of the Palme d'Or, Parasite has been hailed by many as the funniest winner at Cannes since Pulp Fiction. And then there were the two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Foreign Film, and no other film in the world has that...!

Thu 31 Aug 2023 / 20:00 TROOP OF HAPPINESS

Double Palme d'Or winner at Cannes Ruben Östlund has made a bitingly satirical comedy about social roles and the intoxicating power of power that leaves no thread dry on any of its passengers. A biting satire of the richest social class and a film you won't soon forget.
