Monika Žáková took part in a residency at Telegraph Gallery a year ago and it was then that the idea of creating a new mural was born. After a year we finally got to see the work. She told us a few words about the process of creation.
Any artistic creation is always primarily a reflection of the artist's way of thinking. The sketch for the mural comes from "bending the paper" and unfolding it again. This process has an almost performative element to it. Through touch we are able to capture the present moment. Thus, we can say that the content of the painting can be summarized as a record of physical presence. However, I am never completely in control of this process with the material and I have to respect the possibilities and limits of the ongoing dialogue, which is absolutely essential for me. The mural created for the Telegraph is based on folds of paper that create abstract, geometric patterns. The surfaces of the squares divide into triangles, which may refer to infinity in mathematics, as well as a children's game called Heaven, Hell, Paradise.
Monika Žáková (*1987) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Since the beginning of her work she has emphasized precision. Monika's work is characterized by concentration and a strong focus on the cyclization of the technical processing of her paintings. She is fascinated by layering and meaning when dealing with the relationship between materials, especially in the form of canvas and paper.
