Northern Europe is not just cold and dark. Or rather, it is, but for our dramaturgy team, those countries are above all breeding grounds for great and distinctive filmmakers! Style and themes are what define and distinguish Nordic cinema.
For example, the catch-all phrase "Nordic detective story" has become a catch-all term that has long and far transcended the book world. Chilling atmosphere. Fear. Suspense. Film and television have taken it from the written form and made it their own, conquering the global market with ease. But Northerners can do more than write about killing each other and depression. In a world where so much of the traditional clashes with the most progressive, they thrive on unrelenting satire and the darkest humour. That is why Hollywood, for example, adapts almost everything that comes out of Scandinavian cinema. Like the Danes, Swedes, Norwegians or Finns, it must be admitted, but they can't do it yet and soon they won't be able to. It can't be imitated. It has to be lived.
That's why SCANDI is here. This showcase brings a variety of genres of the latest films where you really can't help but choose according to your taste. This year, the Telegraph is giving space to four selected films from this year's rich selection. And what exactly can potential viewers look forward to? The feel-good road-movie BODY LADIES, the meta-film about the making of PROJECT Z OR HOW A ZOMBIE MOVIE GETS MADE, the star-studded historical drama MARGRETTE - QUEEN OF THE NORTH and the rip-roaring tragicomedy about our relationship with civilisation and the midlife crisis. A quartet of representatives of the best that this year's SCANDI has to offer will be waiting for you each evening on 19, 21, 22 and 24 January in the Telegraph Cinema space. We'll also turn off the radiator if you'd like an authentic experience. So bring your sweaters.
