SUMMER: Atrium is alive with music and summer events

26 6 2022

The beginning of summer invites you to enjoy the comfort and relaxation. Ideally in the fresh air and accompanied by great music. Or a movie? Both will do! Most of the events planned this summer will take place in the atrium.

Fans of electronic thumping beats and lovers of live music and acoustic instruments can look forward to a musical harvest. In June, concerts are scheduled as well as Urban Vibes, a regular Saturday musical accompaniment to the atrium seating area.

12 7 Salih Hadžiabdić + No Barriers (concert)

salih

After some time, the Olomouc bard and guitarist with an unmistakable voice, Salih Hadžiabdić, returns to us with musical reinforcement. This time he will be supported by Kája Škubala and Jirka Ronny Ročňák, with whom he performs in his new project No Barriers. The repertoire of the Czech-bass band includes both their own songs and cover versions of well-known international artists moving between the genres of rock, blues and jazz.

20 7 Dan Vertígo (concert)

VERTIGO

Singer-songwriter Dan Vertígo, whose work is in the genre of rocknroll-folkpunk, will perform separately. He has two albums to his credit, several music videos and a rollercoaster of stories and puns in his head. He plays across the Czech Republic both solo and with a band and currently travels to gigs from Smichov by taxi. He will be performing his solo work in the atrium of the Telegraph café. At the concert, expect a thunderous kick and boundless improvisation!

URBAN VIBES, music programme every Saturday at 5pm

URBAN VIBES

Summer Saturdays will belong to URBAN VIBES, a programming format during which the atrium fills with music from buskers, DJs and other musical wizards. July will belong especially to DJ sets. With a good drink and food from the Telegraph Café, enjoy musical creations and improvisations to the rhythms of dance and relaxing music.

The first Urban Vibes of July will be provided on July 2 by pianist Tomáš Višinka, whom diehard Telegraph fans know as the main bandleader from our TTalk talk show. The following two Saturday nights will belong to the DJs. The Deconstructed club and hyperpop genres, characterised by an experimental approach to the club scene that often resigns itself to 'straight beats' and exaggerates certain elements of popular music set in a new context, will be brought to you by DJ Weirdsky on 16 July. A week later, Telegraph resident Jonáš Bláha aka DJ KAPUT - digitech lover, dnb head, social media expert - will be behind the mixing desk for the first time this year. His favourite BPM is 173.

SUMMER CINEMA, every Friday from 21:00

1 7 2022 TIM BURTON´S CORPSE BRIDE

NEVĚSTA

In July, the summer movies will belong to strong movie protagonists! Let's start with puppet Johnny Depp in Victorian-era England in Tim Burton's cult animated musical Corpse Bride! A distinctive style, great songs and lovelorn characters. Set in a 19th century village, the film follows the story of Victor, a young man drawn into the underworld where he is married to a mysterious dead bride. Although life in the Land of the Dead proves to be far more colourful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor comes to the conclusion that there is nothing in this or any other world to keep him separated from his true love...

8 7 2022 THE DISASTER ARTIST.

DISASTER ARTIST

Another truly unforgettable (anti-)hero of our summer movie will be the main character of The Disaster Artist - writer, director and actor Tommy Wiseau, played by James Franco. The full title of the successful American comedy is THE DISASTER ARTIST: THE AMAZING PROPHET and tells the story of the making of The Room, a film that was so bad it became a cult after it was finished due to the ineptitude of its writers. Those who haven't seen the original The Room need not despair. It's not necessary for a complete experience, as this adaptation from the milieu of C-grade Hollywood is both tragicomic and inspiring enough. Discover a unique story of a strange success in failure. Nineteen-year-old Greg Sestero, a drama school student, meets Tommy during one of his acting classes. Film roles are scarce, so the two men decide to make their own movie, starring in it. Tommy may be an oddball, but he throws himself into the film with all the more dedication and passion. Gradually, however, it becomes clear that working with him won't be entirely easy...

15 7 2022 THE INHERITANCE OR FUCKOFFGUYSGOODDAY

Inheritance or the Whorehouse Gutntag

The protagonist Bohuš, played by Bolek Polívka in Vera Chytilová's comedy Inheritance or Fuckoffguysgoodday does not need introduction. The story of Bohumil Stejskal, a simple woodcutter who becomes a millionaire overnight, is provocative in its satirisation of the post-revolutionary social boom of the 1990s. The pun-filled and comic journey to self-discovery has not aged well and will arrive at the summer cinema on Friday 15 July. Cold slivovitz will be waiting at the bar.

22 7 2022 REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

DEAN

An American drama describing the moral decline of American youth during the 1950s belongs to the golden fund of world cinema. Not least because of acting legend James Dean, who played the lead role here. Jim, Judy and Plato are young, angry rebels without purpose, living in the alienated solitude of their protests, in a world of striving, indifferent and too-slow-to-understand adults. Perhaps that is why they are attracted to the steep cliffs on which they play their dangerous tough-guy games. The sad, wounded and hurting hero in blue jeans and red jacket has become a symbol of a teenage generation rebelling against their parents and the world they have prepared for them. The king of the teenagers is dead, rebel Jim remains immortal.

29 - 31 7 2022 FESTIVAL COLORES

The Colores Festival is a special event at the end of July that will breathe life into the atrium three times. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be all about the rhythms of flamenco. On Friday, the festival will open with an exclusive screening of the animated musical film CHICO A RITA. The melodramatic story of jazz musician Chico and singer Rita is told in comic form. The love story begins in the late 1940s in Cuba and gradually moves to the United States and Europe. In the tradition of the best melodramas, their adventure of the eternal search for mutual love unfolds. The Cuban Revolution of 1959 also intervenes in their lives. Music plays an important role, be it jazz or popular Latin American songs. The filmmakers deliberately chose jazz because it has been an important source of inspiration in the development of Cuban music and culture in general.

The last Urban Vibes in July will also be in the tones of flamenco. From 16:30, Morenita de Triana, a Bratislava-born Stanko Kohútek, will play in the atrium. He has been playing flamenco guitar for more than twenty years. He has regularly performed as a solo guitarist in Vienna, Paris and Seville. In July 2005, he and his band Los Remedios performed as guests at a concert of the world-famous Gipsy Kings in Bratislava and he performed in the musical Carmen alongside Lucie Bílá. The Sunday evening of the Colores festival will be closed by guitarist Petr Vít, whose music is most often heard between the Iberian Peninsula and South America. Six strings, evoking the sound of the sea surf, the echoes of a carnival or the silence of the arid Andalusian plains and a sweet end to the first half of summer.
