Grammy Awards 2021

14 3 2021

The Grammys are tonight.

The first time I saw the Grammys live was about fifteen years ago (!!) and year after year since then I stay up on the second Sunday night in February to watch (this year the awards will be a month later due to the covid).

The Grammys are, for me, synonymous with world music show business of all genres. The artistic performances that take place during the ceremony often go down in history. Think of Michael Jackson's legendary 1988 show.

Or a joint performance by Sir Elton John and rapper Eminem, who sang the famous 2001 hit "Stan" hand-in-hand.

Also worth mentioning is Amy Winehouse, whose 2008 performance, broadcast live from London, is rated by many music writers as perhaps the most impressive ever.

In the pomp of musical production, few things surpass the Grammys (perhaps only the Halftime Show at the Superbowl finale). There's always an incredible lineup of artists coming together under one roof to show the world that "this is how it's done." I'm not necessarily a fan of all of the featured artists and current (sub)genres of popular music, but what is certain is that what happens at the Grammys always has an impact on the future of the entire music industry. The hosting of the entire show is also a chapter in itself, which in 2020 was taken on by singer Alicia Keys, who did exceedingly well (see video below). This year, the Grammys are hosted by Noah Trevor, the eminent American comedian and presenter.

In addition, the Grammys often reflect current events. For example, the 2012 edition was affected by the death of Whitney Houston, who died just a day before the awards. Last year's edition was heavily marked by the death of Kobe Bryant, and it's almost certain that this year will be about nothing more than a coronavirus. I'm curious. Tonight won't be a short night.

Live coverage starts on CT Art at 02:00 on the night of Sunday to Monday, March 15, 2021, interpreted by Dana Hábová, commentary by Honza Dědek.
