This historical film starring Mads Mikkelsen as Ludwig von Kahlen presents a period epic set in the 18th century. In 1755, an impoverished captain sets out to conquer the rugged, uninhabitable Danish moors with a seemingly impossible goal: to build a colony there on behalf of the king. In exchange, he gains for himself the much-coveted royal name. But the sole ruler of the territory, the ruthless Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), arrogantly believes that the land belongs to him. When de Schinkel learns that the maid Ann Barbara (Amanda Collin) and her servant husband have run away to hide with Kahlen, the vicious ruler vows revenge and does everything in his power to banish the captain. Undaunted, Kahlen takes up the unequal fight - risking not only his life, but the lives of the immigrant family that has formed around him. Bastard not only offers a period drama with an outstanding performance from Mikkelsen, but also creates an immersive experience through its epic narrative. The film combines historical moments with the main character's personal struggle, offering the audience not only a glimpse into the past, but also the emotional depth and strength of the human will. The film was partially shot in the Czech Republic and also selected to compete at the Venice Film Festival in 2023.
