Amira Alhariri arrived in Prague with her husband and children, bringing with her little more than memories of the life they had to leave behind due to the war in Syria. Over the course of ten years, we follow her family as they face a challenge for which there is no preparation: the children are growing up between two worlds. In everyday situations fraught with unexpected tension, we see her daughter torn between wearing the hijab and trying to fit in with her peers, her youngest son beginning to speak better Czech than Arabic, and her middle children seeking a balance between their parents’ expectations and their own, emerging
identities. While her husband builds a small kebab business and spends long hours working to provide for the family, Amira becomes their cultural anchor. She teaches the children traditional recipes, tells stories from home, and maintains contact with relatives scattered across the globe. Yet with each passing day, she watches her children adapt to their new life in a way that fills her with pride—but also quiet concern. Each child is finding their own path to adulthood in this new environment, and Amira finds herself asking more and more often whether the place where her children’s future will unfold can truly become home.
