A karaoke bar where the sounds are not trite pop songs, but authentic sounds of war. The project Repeat After Me (2022-2024), presented by the originally Lviv-based collective Open Group at the Venice Biennale in 2024 and now being shown for the first time in the Czech Republic, subverts a familiar entertainment format into a chilling testament to trauma, memory, survival - and empathetic sharing. What we tend to dismiss as too superficial and entertaining is here transformed into a language of experience that cannot be overheard. Moreover, thanks to the conditions of the Olomouc installation, in the proper context of a night of fun without responsibility.
The artistic collective Open Group was founded in 2012. Since 2019, its permanent members are Yuriy Biley (Wroclaw/Berlin), Pavlo Kovach (Lviv) and Anton Varga (New York). The group focuses on collective work and develops collaborative projects conceived as "open situations" that explore interactions between people and specific spaces. Between artistic and curatorial roles, Open Group addresses contemporary socio-political realities through experimental visual forms. The group operated an independent art space in Lviv. It has received a number of awards, including the PinchukArtCentre Prize (special mention 2013, main prize 2015). Her works were presented at the 56th - as part of the Future Generation Art Prize@Venice - and 58th. Venice Art Biennale (2017, 2019), both as part of the Ukrainian Pavilion. In 2024, Open Group represented Poland there (Repeat after me II project). The group's work has been presented at a number of shows in Europe, USA and Asia.
The project is presented by Ecological Days Olomouc and the One World International Human Rights Film Festival with the support of the Polish Institute in Prague, Fotograf Zone, Telegraph Pulse and Telegraph Gallery.
