In the Contemporary Art Collecting lecture series you will learn from successful and emerging collectors or curators and experts in contemporary art investment what impulses led them to become interested in the contemporary art market. They will reveal how they build or help build their collections, and what their criteria are for selecting specific works. The lecture series is aimed at the complete layman with an interest in art, as well as collectors who are puzzling over how to evaluate their collection or create a remarkable and unique collection.
The lecture will be given by the theorist and curator Barbora Vanicka Čápová.
Barbora Vanicka Čápová is a visual theorist with overlaps into curating. In 2023 she completed her PhD studies at the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem, where she focused on the phenomenon of the artist-curator and the current possibilities of production, presentation and perception of art at the border of physical and virtual interfaces. In 2023 she published the thematic book Is It Just a Myth? Seeing Double and since 2024 she has been leading the Livebid Originals project for the promotion and sale of contemporary art. She is a member of the programme and expert board of the Fotograf Zone platform and part of the editorial team of SWARM MAG. Over the last few years, she has contributed to Artalk, Czechdesign and Material Times magazines.
In her presentation, she will try to place the phenomenon of collecting in the broader framework of the online space. She will outline the potential and pitfalls of online art buying and help the audience navigate progressive ways of presenting art in virtual environments that can serve as an interesting extension of their existing sources of inspiration and as a tool for self-consciously deepening their visual sensitivity to the digital environment.
