Lia, a retired schoolteacher, vowed before her sister's death to find her niece Tekla, whom her family had disowned because of her trans identity. She and her young neighbor Achim travel to Istanbul, where Tekla has supposedly fled. Istanbul plays a key role in the film. Its intricate streets, hidden neighbourhoods and quirky inhabitants represent the hope not only of finding Tekla, but also of new friendships, horizons and values. Swedish director Levan Akin handles difficult subjects with great humanity, empathy and humour, and the story can touch all of us.
