The premiere of a star-studded biopic about one of Italy's greatest painters. It will be released in Czech cinemas in December at the earliest.
Italy in the 1600s. Michelangelo Merisi - better known as Caravaggio - is a brilliant artist who refuses to conform to the strict rules of the Council of Trent governing the depiction of sacred subjects. When Pope Paul V learns that Caravaggio is using prostitutes, thieves and vagrants as models for his sacred paintings, he commissions a secret Vatican agent to conduct a thorough investigation. The agent is to decide whether the painter will be granted the pardon he asked for when he was sentenced to death for killing one of his rivals in a duel for love. "The Shadow" begins an undercover investigation of a painter whose life and art fascinate, disturb, and disrupt... and wields absolute power over the fate of genius.
Michele Placido - the writer, director and actor of this film - comes to this project after a career spanning 50 years and four years of working on it, with his 14th film as a director. The film depicts the complex and adventurous life of Michelangelo Merisi aka Caravaggio, revealing his complicated inner contradictions and deep dark torments. Rebellious and restless, pious and outrageous, independent and transgressing social boundaries, Caravaggio, as Placido portrays him, is a cursed artist with absolute talent, but above all a rock star in a time when there were none, a rebel without a cause who must face the disturbing consequences of his reckless life - with all its women and inner demons - in which genius and irrepressibility stand side by side. Placido thus presents us with Caravaggio as a timeless figure, an utterly fascinating and universal icon.
