Paris 1900. The poet Christian (Ewan McGregor) recalls how he has joined a theatre company that is rehearsing a new play. Only, in order to stage it at the Moulin Rouge, they need to convince the owner of the establishment (Jim Broadbent), who has one thing on his mind - the beautiful courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). They therefore decide to introduce Christian to Satine. That evening, however, Satine is to meet a wealthy duke (Richard Roxburgh). A mix-up occurs and Satine professes her love for Christian, believing him to be the Duke. Christian tells her the truth, and the real Duke appears. Satine resolves the situation in her own way. She offers herself to the Duke in exchange for being an investor in the new play. The Duke agrees. Will Satine and Christian's love come to fruition? And what about the jealous Duke?
