The Science in Film series is back! After analyzing the film Gravity, we now delve into the world of vampire fiction. Or is it not fiction? Miroslav Peřina, an expert on the subject, will answer that and more!
In Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) falls victim to dark magic and turns into a vampire. Where does the vampire myth come from and what is its real basis? Which typical characteristics of vampires can be explained by biochemistry and history, and which are only from the world of fantasy and science fiction? What might real vampires look like and survive, is it possible for a bite to infect a healthy human? And what do vampires have to do with garlic? These and many other questions will be answered after the film by biochemist Miroslav Peřina with a lecture on Science and Vampires followed by a discussion.
In collaboration with the UP Crowd, a group of students and friends of science, we present another film screening followed by a science perspective on the film's theme. The association is based at Palacký University in Olomouc and its main goal is to popularize and promote science. It organises lectures, events for schools, stands with experiments and you can also follow the Vědátor project on social media. After the screening, the biochemist Miroslav Peřina will present a scientific view of the typical attributes of vampires, their possible functioning and, on the contrary, features from the world of science fiction with a lecture on Science and vampires followed by a discussion.
Dark Shadows
The Collins family struggles with a strange curse that has haunted them for generations. They decide to move from England to America to start a new life. Twenty years later, their son Barnabas is a powerful man who has built a great city and established the Collinwood estate. His wonderful life ends when he breaks the heart of the beautiful witch Angelique. She curses his family, kills Barnabas' love and turns him into a vampire himself. She then had him buried alive in a coffin where he was imprisoned for nearly 200 years. When he finally awakens, he finds a very different world outside in 1972 and the last remnants of the Collins family in their once grand mansion. Barnabas is determined to restore his family to its former glory, but is thwarted at every opportunity by his former lover.
