Martin Jirousek's lecture delves into the mysterious world of evil and occult motifs in film, from the very beginning to today. In it, mirrors are not just some ordinary prop, but a burning symbol that film uses to discuss who we are and how we perceive ourselves.
He will also discuss how cinematography differs from classic film and why movement on screen is not just an ordinary thing. There will also be excerpts from restored silent films - from the very traditional ones to those where the authors literally won with the mirror motif.
The mirror can be a source of fear, a gateway to other worlds or a way out again. This lecture will recall a legend of modern cinema, the creator of the first auteur feature film and also H. H. Ewers, who made the first feature-length horror film ever.
There will be interesting facts from literature, graphic and printed materials, as well as connections to the Czech and Czech-Slovak scene, where different cultures meet and film vampirism is not new.
