This poetic, visually refined documentary builds an intimate monument to the most successful Czech artist of the early millennium. Ján Mančuška died tragically at the age of 39. He exhibited at MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, but did not achieve comparable fame in his homeland. The vast body of work he left behind is united by the principle of absence - what is not in the painting speaks with surprising intensity. Director Štěpán Pech approaches Mančuška's portrait in the same way, tracing the boundaries of his intimate, family life and cultural landscape with the missing centre. An unexpectedly cathartic and long-overdue debut, it earned an award at the Jihlava IDFF 2023.
