Nora (Renate Reinsve) reunites with her father after years away. Charismatic and once-famous director Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård) has written the lead role for her in what is set to be the culmination of his career. When Nora refuses to cooperate, he casts eager Hollywood actress Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning) instead. What begins is a series of hilarious and painfully honest encounters as Nora and her sister Agnes come to terms with complicated family relationships and the unexpected presence of an American star. Following the success of Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World, he returned to Cannes with a sensitive comedy drama that was awarded the Grand Prix by the jury.
