Vienna, early 1980s. Perla, a Czechoslovak dissident, painter and single mother, tries to make a living here. Above all, she wants to support her nine-year-old daughter Julia, who is a talented pianist. Her new relationship with Austrian Josef gives her new hope and strength. Unexpectedly, however, she receives a call from Andrej, who has just been released from prison, from his former home in Slovakia, informing her that he is seriously ill. He is her former boyfriend from her youth and Julia's father. This situation shakes Perla, and she finally decides on a risky plan. With fake papers, she returns to normalized Czechoslovakia to finally deal with her past. This will completely change her newly constructed existence, her newfound freedom and the safety of her daughter.
