The film captures the prominent painter Jan Merta in a situation where he accepts the offer of a new exhibition without a single finished painting. Through the eyes of his son Tomás, we gradually follow his father's seemingly carefree work, where gallows deadlines can last for years. We see Merta in his everyday life, looking for every possible excuse to avoid painting. However, Jan Merta's ordinary life presents many humorous to bizarre situations, some of which occasionally enlighten him with sudden inspiration. Gradually, we discover that his creative process never stops - even at the most unexpected moments, such as when he's tossing the garden compost.
