CINEMA: Oscars 2025 and March with the best shorts

28 2 2025 | Autor: Michael Bukovanský

The golden statuettes of the American Film Academy have not been handed out yet, but we already know that March will belong to their potential winners in our cinema. The award ceremony, hosted by Conan O'Brien, will take place on Monday, March 3, which is also when our Oscar micro-show kicks off. You can see Anora, Brutalist, Conclave, or The Witch in almost every other theater, but you'll find something special here.

The first three Mondays in March will bring the best in contemporary short films! Come first to see a selection of the most interesting films made by Czech film school students last year, as part of the screening of Young Filmmakers Looking for a Girl. Students and graduates from the UTB in Zlín, the Miroslav Ondříček Film Academy in Písek and FAMU in Prague will come to present and discuss their films. Among them are also the creators of films nominated for prestigious awards such as the Czech Lion or the Czech Film Critics Award. We will also present the winning Czech film that won the Student Oscar, which was awarded to our guests at the beginning of February. So the Oscars theme will definitely not be overlooked on this night.

The second and third Monday will belong to the Oscar shortlist categories BEST SHORT FILM and BEST SHORT ANIMATED FILM - that is, two bands of the best short films from around the world. This will give you a unique opportunity to see the nominees and winners on the big screen.

Oscar March will close with the thriller musical EMILIA PÉREZ, which received a whopping 13 nominations this year - a near-record number. The film, from French director Jacques Audiard, tells the story of a disgraced lawyer and the trance-like transformation of a Mexican cartel boss, and is sparking heated debates wherever it is screened. Some love it, while others condemn it and don't wish it well with its high number of nominations. In addition, the film is accompanied by considerable controversy - for example, the past of its (also nominated) lead actress, Carla Sofía Gascón. In short, Emilia Pérez is a cinematic phenomenon with an extraordinary reception, and we cannot miss it. But you can find out more right at the screening...
