With the help of private letters, award-winning director Phil Grabsky's new film reveals a whole new perspective on the man who not only contributed to the birth of Impressionism with his paintings, but was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Yet, and perhaps for that very reason, Monet's life presents a gripping story of a man who, under the cover of his sunlit canvases, suffered feelings of depression and loneliness and even tended towards suicide. But as his art evolved and his love of gardening led to the fame of his garden in Giverney, humour, understanding and a love of life emerge in his letters.
