An aging shirt peddler Wikström makes a big decision: to leave his alcoholic wife and his fading business. After an episodic career as a poker player, he buys a non-profitable restaurant in a forgotten Helsinki backyard. It soon becomes clear that the unapproachable husk of a small-talking hero hides a big heart - that's when Wikström offers a job to a man much younger than himself, who by fate finds himself in a seemingly hopeless situation. As is usual in Aki Kaurismäki's films, humanity, friendship and humour flash through the bleakness and give this bittersweet comedy a flavour of optimism.
