Soudružky s kroužky by Dominik Migač, Marta Hermannová and Jan Pichler is a great puppet play that takes you into the life of an ordinary comrade in normalized Czechoslovakia, but it is definitely not a boring history.
It all takes place on a small stage, where a cute paper puppet - almost like a cut-out from a period fashion magazine - navigates through the housing estate, the frustration of standing in a banana queue, the subway and the windows of the Kotva department store. It combines foreign designs with authentic details like portraits of Husák and slogans that sound more like a joke today. The whole thing comes across as a mix of pastel colours and absurd moments, which add up to a slightly nostalgic but also critical look at a time that was all about normalisation.
