Mary Cassatt became famous for painting the ordinary lives of the women around her. Her radical paintings showed them as intellectual and inquisitive, representing a fundamental shift in how women were perceived in art. She created dozens of paintings and prints of mothers and children, but she never married or had children herself. She was an educated artist who decided to join a group of Parisian radicals - the Impressionists. Through her work and interviews with leading curators and artists, the film tells the story of a sometimes overlooked American Impressionist whose paintings of modern women were at the centre of major cultural and social change.
