HEADLINE PROGRAMME

The cornerstone of TEFF's dramaturgy is the films. Unsurprisingly. Do you know which ones yet?

This year's headliner is the Czech premiere and release of Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel, which is the centrepiece of this year's visual showcase. The Telegraph will present the documentary in Czech cinemas in collaboration with distribution company Artcam. The film tells the story of the genius loci of New York's art scene in Manhattan's legendary Chelsea Hotel. Poets, beatniks, musicians, designers, writers, actors, hippies and artists and directors have passed through this place. Alongside Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Arthur Miller, Mark Twain, Jonas Mekas, Keroac, Warhol, Hendrix, Morrison, Patti Smith and a host of other legends from various sectors of the art scene, director Miloš Forman has also appeared here. Which brings us to the opening film of TEFF22, the iconic American musical Hair. The immortal film adaptation of the cult musical Hair is in fact the result of Forman's several week stay at the Chelsea Hotel. Moreover, in times of war-tested Europe, we feel it's appropriate to remember a film that rails so much against war. Come tune in for the opening night gala on October 26 with a welcome drink and Let the Sunshine In.

But we will be showing many more films! You'll get to know the pond of the Czech art scene through two new documentaries from Czech Television that we'll be screening as theatrical premieres. First, you will get to know a leading figure of surrealism in the visual arts, a new film called Toyen, Baroness of Surrealism by acclaimed feature and documentary film director Andrea Sedláčková. The second film mapping the Czech art scene is a portrait of painter and performer Petr Nikl, also recently produced by Czech Television. The documentary Sunrises of Petr Nikl will be presented by the protagonist of the documentary himself, thus closing our mini-festival. However, this will not be the only opportunity to get to know Petr Nikl. As part of the accompanying programme, you can also attend his performance full of original songs, masks and improvisation! For more information see the accompanying programme section.

You'll be able to experience the legendary series of paintings by Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh through the screening of the documentary Sunflowers, which will be screened as part of the distribution initiative EOS, Exhibition on Screen. Why did Van Gogh choose sunflowers? What message does this series of paintings convey? How do the individual paintings differ? What have the scientists who have studied these works in detail discovered? In addition to Amsterdam, the film visits London, Philadelphia, Tokyo and Munich to unravel the mystery of Vincent van Gogh's five famous sunflower paintings and create a unique virtual exhibition for cinema screens.

As this year's TEFF falls in time for the autumn holidays, we also have screenings for children as part of the TEFF series! Bring the kids to the screening of The Websters on Film, a new Czech-Slovak animated fairy tale based on the award-winning and beloved Webster family spider bedtime story. The film will also be screened with the participation of lead animator Andrej Gregorchok and children will not leave the screening empty-handed. You will then be able to meet Andrej Gregorčok once again during the accompanying programme, as he will be one of the panellists on the current state of Czech and Slovak animated film.

We have one rest from last year's edition that we need to fulfill before the official TEFF22. Last year's premiered documentary about a figure from the world of abstract art Hilma af Klint: Beyond the Visible will be screened. We are doing so because we promised last year that the film would be introduced and discussed by art historian David Voda. However, an injury got in the way of last year's screening and the film was shown without him. So this year's edition is a corrective to last year's edition, so let's start with a clean slate. You can look forward to his expert introduction and a short talk after the film as part of the accompanying programme

SUPPLEMENTARY PROGRAMME

If you are looking for more ways to be educated or entertained among the above films, just take your pick. Talks, tours, debates, workshops for children, theatre and afterparties.

Thu 26 10 15:00 lecture
Discussion with David Voda after the film Hilma af Klint: Beyond the Visible.
How is it possible that Hilma af Klint's work has only recently been appreciated? David Voda will tell you everything you want to know about the artist and her contribution to the world of fine art.
