Bowlegged and tattooed, at once menacing and strangely tender, Mads Mikkelsen excels as the anti-hero of this Danish film from director Nicolas Winding Refn, who is back on form. The standalone sequel takes us back to Copenhagen's druggy underworld of hookers and hooded men and focuses on the lowest of the low, skinhead Tonny. He's just out of prison and hopes to return to his former way of life, but his father, the leader of the underworld, who controls a number of chop shops and drug stores, treats him like a bumbling piece of shit. Refn tells the story with focus, realism and stylish intensity. He collaborated with the late writer Hubert Selby Jr. (Requiem for a Dream) on his previous film, the Hollywood thriller Fear X. The Dealer II bears the heady influence of Selby's unflinching prose in its depiction of a downtrodden, macho man.

A selection of the best of recent Scandinavian cinema. SCANDI offers a cross-section of the films and genres that define the cinematic North - from thrillers to black comedies to provocative documentaries - with filmmakers, experts on the subjects in question and other guests.
