A man (Willem Dafoe) and a woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) fall passionately in love. Black-and-white slick camera shots revel in their preoccupation with sex. At the same time, we watch the baby's baby steps as she enthusiastically approaches towards the falling snowflakes outside the open window. The viewer already has an inkling of how this scene will play out, and the tragedy that could have easily been averted will of course change the lives of the Man and Woman forever. The Woman completely collapses, the Man tries to save their marriage and ease their suffering. He proposes a joint therapy session in a remote wooden cabin in the middle of the woods, which, to the viewer's surprise, seem to have stepped out of their worst nightmare. This is where the couple's stay changes and what was supposed to be their "paradise" becomes the worst kind of hell. Animated nature and twisted psychology play a big part in this strange experiment - will the Man and Woman return as a couple, or each alone? Will they even come back? One of the most controversially received films of the Cannes IFF, it won Charlotte Gainsbourg the Best Actress award.
